Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR )
EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment method that was developed by psychologist, Dr Francine Shapiro, in the 1980s. During her time as the senior researcher for the Mental Research Institute (in Palo Alto, USA), she published the first papers and data to support the benefits of the therapy in the late 1980’s.
This new found therapy opened up a wealth of research which continues all over the world. One of her first and very successful trials was with Vietnam veterans suffering with psychological trauma arising from their experiences during and related to the war. It since has been found to be effective in helping childhood sexual and/or physical abuse or neglect, natural disaster, assault, surgical trauma, traffic and workplace accidents. Since its original development, EMDR is also increasingly used to help individuals with other issues like phobias and performance anxiety.
EMDR is a complex and powerful therapy and used to compliment our hypnotherapy.
